We are fortunate to be living in one of the most incredible times in human history. Advancements in computer technology, genetic engineering, and medical research occur daily. With these advancements, comes the bombardment of information: Feng Shui will change your life, alien abductions occur all the time, creams can remove cellulite, pills are better than exercise, Intelligent Design is a scientific alternative explanation to evolution, magnets in your shoes will heal pain, a bronze bracelet will balance your energy levels and you can speak to the deceased through a medium. Unfortunately, many people believe these claims are based on science.
My goal is not to transform Non-Biology majors into Biology majors. My goal is not to keep Biology majors in Biology. My goal is to help students become informed consumers, voters, and jurors by thinking critically. Questions can be answered using the scientific method. This process involves gathering data to formulate and test naturalistic explanations for natural phenomena.
Years after a student leaves my class, they may not be able to recite the 1st Law of Thermodynamics or write the chemical equation for the breakdown of glucose to yield ATP. But if they can ask proper questions, research a topic, synthesize and evaluate the information, and can justify and express their opinion, I would consider us both a tremendous success.
